 National Grange Achievement Awards Program 

Achievement Awards – May be earned by any Grange member any age!!! Everyone is eligible to participate. If you feel that this is something that you would like to participate in and take the time and effort to meet the requirements and wish to receive a certificate, please complete the tasks for each seal and certificate. 

Guidelines:

  • Seals do not have to be earned in any order.
  • A certificate will be issued with the first seal earned for each individual Achievement Award in a given year. Additional seals will be sent separately if applied for at different times.
 

Many ideas for programs, projects and workshops can be developed from the guidelines presented in these achievement awards. Let your imagination guide you as you develop programs and reach out to people in your community. 

2012 Achievement Award Programs 

William Saunders Agricultural Achievement Award – New for 2012

  • Sapphire: Visit a local farm and talk with the farmer about what it is like to run a farm. Write a short essay describing what you learned and send it to the National Youth Director. Or, if you live on a farm, write a short essay about what it is like to live on a farm and send it to the National Youth Director. Participate in the National Youth Department “faces of agriculture.”
  • Emerald: select an area of interest; learn as much about your selection as you can, prepare an exhibit and exhibit it at a community/county fair, Grange fair or exhibit day or meeting, trade fair, or in a local business. (Examples include: animals, crops, home improvements, home economics skills, science, woodworking, mechanical, computer technology, photography, art, musical talent, theatrical talent, etc…) Take picture of your project, keep records of the expenses involved in the project, compare the costs involved with the potential profit, evaluate and write a conclusion about your project. Keep all your information in a notebook and present it to your State Youth Director who will apply for your Achievement Award.
  • Silver: Develop, print and distribute a brochure, table tent card or display of your Grange and display at your local or state fair. Send a copy of the brochure, table tent card, or a picture of the display to the National Grange Youth Development Director, as well as photos of you at the fair with the display. Or publish a newsletter for your Grange or develop and or design or maintain a webpage or create a video or PowerPoint presentation promoting your Grange or a special activity sponsored by the Grange that could also be presented at a local or state fair. Also included are Facebook and YouTube presentations. Send a copy to the National Grange Youth Development Director.
  • Ruby: Plant a garden or a plant or develop an agriculture enterprise (livestock, dairy, direct farm sales, etc…) and keep a diary of the progress of your plants through pictures and words. Keep all your information in a notebook or record book and present it to your State Youth Director who will apply for your Achievement Award.
  • Gold: Organize a mutual event with your local FFA, 4H or other agricultural organization and your subordinate/community or Pomona Grange. Let these groups explain what they do and do the same for the Grange. Have some kind of activity for the two groups to do together such as games, discussions about agriculture, etc. Have the appropriate Grange director/Master (president) verify participation and send a copy to the National Youth Director.
 

John Trimble Legislative Achievement Award – New for 2012

  • Sapphire: Plan a legislative night for your subordinate/community or Pomona Grange. Invite local elected officials to your meeting and have them discuss issues important to your elected officials to your meeting and have them discuss issues important to your Grange. Or, present a workshop on the legislative process. Have the appropriate Grange director/Master (president) verify participation and send a copy to the National Youth Director.
  • Emerald: Research an issue important to your community, state or nation. See if there is an existing Grange policy. Review existing policy and decide if it is still current. If no policy exists or the current Grange policy needs updating, write a resolution for Grange passage. Submit the resolution for consideration at your subordinate/community Grange. Write a report on your findings and any actions that were taken. If contest available, have the report judged at a state Grange session. Have State Youth Director verify the work and send a copy to the National Youth Director.
  • Silver: Memorize the obligation ceremony or welcoming ceremony; recite it to your subordinate Master, state youth director or state master. Have the qualified individual verify and send verification letter to National Youth Director.
  • Ruby: Organize a ritual workshop for youth and young adults in your state. Include the opening and closing as well as degree work. Send a copy of the plan for the workshop to the National Youth Director.
  • Gold: Participate in the National Youth Officer Team or State Youth Officer Team, or read the code book of the National Grange to a qualified individual, with five mistakes or less.
 

Drill Achievement Award

    •  
      • Drills are impressive; also drills are a good method of teaching teamwork. Learning to work with other people is an important skill in life. The founders worked as a team to create this wonderful organization and many people over the years have continued to work as a team to keep it going.
      • Minimum number of people needed in a Drill – Three. There is no maximum.
  • Sapphire: To earn this seal an individual must participate in a drill presentation at your subordinate or Pomona Grange; or participate in a school drill or other organization drill. You will need to obtain a letter from the Grange, school or organization official verifying your participation.
  • Emerald: Participate in a drill presentation at your state Grange Youth Camp, Convention/Session or Drill Competition. You will need to obtain a letter from an official verifying your participation and send it to the National Grange Youth Development Director.
  • Silver: Participate in a Regional Drill presentation or competition. Your participation needs to be verified by an official in the region and sent to the National Grange Youth Director.
  • Ruby: Create an original drill and lead a group in the drill at your local Grange, Pomona Grange, State Grange, regional conference or in a school or other organization setting. Submit a copy of the drill to the National Youth Development Director along with a list of all the participants.
  • Gold: Prepare and present a workshop on drills. Send a copy of your materials to the National Youth Development Director with the date the workshop was presented and the number of people who attended along with your evaluation for improving the workshop.

      Any member who completes all five levels in one calendar year will receive a special Achievement Award lapel pin. 

Oliver Hudson Kelley Public Speaking Achievement Award

  • Sapphire: Prepare and present a speech to your Grange or another group. Your subordinate/community Grange youth chairman or Master may verify your participation by writing a confirmation letter, which is to be sent to the National Grange Youth Development Director.
  • Emerald: Present your speech at a Pomona Grange activity or meeting or other county activity. Your Pomona youth chairman or Master may verify your participation by writing a confirmation letter and sending it to the National Grange Youth Development Director.
  • Silver: Participate in your State Grange’s Public Speaking program. State Youth Directors will apply for this Achievement Award for participants. All State winners will compete at the regional program, which will be held at the regional youth conferences.
  • Ruby:  Participate in your regional Public Speaking program or contest.
  • Gold: Prepare and present a workshop on public speaking for your Grange or another group. Obtain a letter of confirmation from the Master or person in charge of the group and send it to the National Grange Youth Development Director. Present a speech at the National Grange Evening of Excellence or serve as a presenter for a National Youth Department program.
 

Francis McDowell Grange Trivia Challenge

      Purpose: To increase the knowledge of Grange trivia, events and world events.

    The challenge will be in written format. The questions will include but not be limited to the Grange fourth degree manual, the digest, Grange history books, the National Grange Officers and Directors, and local news media (national and international stories).

    Awards: the award will be a certificate noting the completion of the challenge for those who score above 75%.

    Challenges may be obtained at any time by contacting the National Youth Development Director or from the National Grange Youth website at www.nationalgrangeyouth.org

    When you have completed the challenge return it to the National Youth Development Director.

    Horizon Leadership participants and National Youth Officer Team members will be expected to complete the Trivia Challenge prior to attending and participating in the National Convention.

    Grange Youth achieving a perfect score on the test will be recognized at National Session during the Youth Activity Days. 

Aaron B. Grosh Mentoring Award - Revised for 2012

      Purpose: To encourage Youth to mentor to Junior Grange members or youth in the community.

  • Sapphire: Assist the Junior Grange leader with the Junior Grange meetings and activities-obtain a letter confirming your assistance from the Junior Leader and send it to the National Grange Youth Development Director.

    If no Junior Grange exists in your area, look for other clubs to assist, such as 4H, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, volunteer to read at story hour at your local library, etc…

  • Emerald: This level can be earned one of four ways:
    1. Assist in the establishment of a Junior Grange program in your subordinate/community or Pomona Grange.
    2. Serve as a Junior Grange leader at the community or Pomona level.
    3. Lead a Junior Grange service, community or fun activity.
    4. If no Junior Grange exists, work as a volunteer with a youth program such as, but not only, 4H, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Big Brothers, Big Sisters.
  •  

      A minimum of six (6) service hours is required. For certification, obtain a letter from adult leader and submit it to the National Grange Youth Development Director.

  • Silver: Become a counselor for your State Junior Grange Camp, or a counselor at any other camp (4H, Church, etc…), obtain a letter from the camp director confirming your participation as a counselor which should be sent to the National Grange Youth Development Director.
  • Ruby: Assist with State session/convention Junior Grange activities, including assist juniors with the presentation of the Junior Degree, Junior Grange tour, Junior Grange talent show or other State Junior Department events. If there are no formal Junior Grange activities, be a buddy to a junior member attending the state convention. Obtain a letter from an official stating your participation from your state junior director and give a copy of it to the National Grange Youth Development Director.
  • Gold: Assist with national session/convention Junior Grange Activities, including presentation of the Junior Degree, leading Junior Grange workshops, or Junior Grange event set up. If not attending National Session, the seal can be earned by leading a workshop at a State or National Junior Grange event.
 

Caroline Hall Achievement Award

    Caroline A. Hall is recognizes as the “eighth” founder of the Grange. One of the many gifts she brought to the organization was the gift of music. She was a major force behind the production of the first Grange Song Book. This award will recognize those who are still contributing talent to the Grange and to their community. Another of the things she was noted for was her contributions to her community.

  • Sapphire: Share a specific talent you have in one of your subordinate/community Grange or Pomona Grange programs. Obtain a letter of verification from the program chairman and send a copy of it to the National Grange Youth Development Director. The letter should include the date of performance, presentation of the event such as a photo and the number of people in attendance.
  • Emerald: Participate in a community service project in your Grange or your community. Obtain a letter of verification from the project coordinator and send a copy of it to the National Grange Youth Development Director. The letter should include the dates you helped with the project and as many specifics as possible.
  • Silver: Share a specific talent you have at one of your State Grange activities or enter a talent contest which doesn’t have to be a Grange Talent contest. Obtain a letter of verification from the project coordinator and send a copy of it to the National Grange Youth Development Director. The letter should include the date of performance and the number of people in attendance.
  • Ruby: Share a specific talent at a regional conference; assist with planning games or workshops. Obtain a letter of verification from the project coordinator and send a copy of it to the National Grange Youth Development Director. The letter should include the date of performance and the number of people in attendance.
  • Gold: Assist in organizing or organize a local Grange or community talent show or a service project. Newsletters and other forms of publicity should be utilized. Submit a copy of the program, which includes the names of the program or project, the names of the people participating and the title of their performance with the number in attendance and date to the National Grange Youth Development Director.
  • Copper: Participate in or organize a fundraiser for a charity and complete a report for the Caroline A. Hall T.L.C. Recognition Program. For the report, send the details on the event/speaker, number in attendance, and preplanning and post planning checklists/comments.
 

William Ireland Deaf Awareness Achievement Award

    For many years, the National Grange has recognized the importance of communication skills and community service. One program that has been the hallmark of the organization has been its commitment to deaf awareness. The National Grange Youth program recognizes our long-term association with this issue with a unique achievement award.

  • Sapphire: Learn the manual alphabet. Demonstrate it to someone proficient in sign language. (It can be done at a Sign a Song contest) Send verification letter to National Grange Youth Development Director.
  • Emerald: Develop a deaf awareness display or program. Present/display it at a subordinate/community or Pomona Grange meeting. Send a copy of the program or photo of this display with verification letter from the local youth director or Master (president) to the National Grange Youth Development Director.
  • Silver: Participate in state sign-a-song contest; enter an educational display at State Session, state youth camp or state youth conference. State youth director, community service director, deaf activities director or state Master will apply for the award.
  • Ruby: Participate in a regional sign-a-song contest or present a speech on deaf awareness at regional youth conference.
  • Gold: Participate in the National Session Evening of Excellence Sign a Song contest to develop an education publication (such as: brochure, website, PowerPoint, video, etc…) to promote deaf awareness and/or sign language.
 
 
 

National Grange Youth Membership Representative Program 

  •  
    • Several Youth who have shown outstanding leadership qualities, interest in Grange growth, and served as a Horizon Leadership Ambassador or Young Couple will be selected to assist the National Grange Membership Department at Grange Growth Summits or Advanced Team Training, funding permitting. A selection committee, appointed National Youth Development Director, will select the representatives. The committee, along with the National Grange Membership director, will judge the candidates based on interview, speaking ability, availability to attend a GGS/Advanced Team Training event and a written test of Grange knowledge.
    • Their duties would include:
      • Assisting the National Membership Director at the GGS/Advanced Team Training.
      • Represent the National Grange Youth Department at these membership development events.
      • Participate in follow-up events promoting Grange membership growth.
      • Provide valuable input.
    • The National Grange Membership and Youth Department will pay for transportation costs and summit fees.
 

National Grange Mentoring Program 

  •  
    • Two youth, preferable one male and one female, who have shown outstanding mentoring abilities as a Horizon Leadership Ambassador will be selected to serve as mentors to youth attending the National Grange Convention. Dependent on Youth department funding, the National Mentors will also receive membership development training and assist with National Grange-sponsored activities.
    • A selection committee, appointed National Youth Development Director, will select the mentors. The committee will judge the candidates based on ambassadorship, an interview, speaking ability, and a written test of Grange Knowledge. The first alternates, must be willing to step in should the mentors not be able to finish his/her term.
    • Their duties would include:

      • Helping the Horizon Leadership participants know where things are at the hotel.
      • Greeting upon check-in and helping them find their rooms.
      • Involving those who are reluctant to become involved.
      • Assisting the Director with details of convention. For example: in contacting participants when last minute changes are made or instructions are needed, or being at a workshop when the Director needs to be somewhere else.
      • Act as a facilitator for workshops when needed.
      • Provide valuable input as to age appropriate workshops.
      • Arrive at convention Tuesday evening or early Wednesday to allow time to meet with Director before participants arrive.
      • Plan get-acquainted activities for Wednesday evening.
      • Assist and/or lead other Youth events during National Session.

    Grange Foundation Youth Leadership Fund will pay transportation costs to the convention, plus motel costs at the convention and the meal functions required to attend (Get acquainted dinner, tour, Horizon Leadership dinner, and celebration banquet, etc…) All other meals would be at their own expense.

Horizon Leadership Ambassador Program – Revised for 2012 

  •  
    • The purpose of the Horizon Leadership Ambassador program is to provide an opportunity for Youth and Young Couples, selected to represent their state at a National Grange convention, to build their leadership potential; broaden their view of the Grange by experiencing a National Convention; receive educational training to use in their own states; build relationships with Grangers throughout the nation by having fun.
    • The National Grange Horizon Leadership Ambassador program is an opportunity for youth selected by their state to participate in activities as guests of the Grange Foundation, Youth Leadership Fund.
    • The National Grange will provide scholarship assistance toward room and meal costs at the National Grange convention for Horizon Leadership Ambassador Program.
    • Each state may send 2 youth and/or one young couple who meet the following Criteria:
      1. Youth Ambassadors must be 16-21 years of age, have observed their 16th birthday, but not their 22nd birthday by December 31st of the year they attend the National Session. These individuals must also be single, never been married, have children and must not marry and/or have children during term of service. If under 18, must have parent’s consent.
      2. Young Couples must be between the ages of 18-35, have observed their 18th birthday, but not their 36th birthday by December 31st of the year they attend the National Session.
      3. Ambassadors/Young Couples must have been a Grange member for a minimum of one year.
      4. Previous State Ambassadors/Young Couples who have participated in this program at the National Grange Convention are not eligible. Exception: Young Couples who are former Youth Ambassadors are eligible to participate.
      5. Ambassadors/Young Couples must meet their State’s requirements.
      6. Ambassadors/Young Couples must be able to attend the National convention to represent their state during Youth activities days. (Wednesday evening thru Saturday). The Ambassadors/Young Couples must complete three seals in the Oliver Hudson Kelley Achievement Award. They must complete one of the John Thompson Ritual Achievement Awards.
      7. Ambassadors/Young Couples must also complete the requirements for a minimum of 2 seals of any of the other achievement awards between September 1st of the previous year and by October 15th of the current year.
      8. Ambassadors/Young Couples must attend a regional youth conference in the past 2 years before National Session.
      9. Each Horizon Leadership Ambassador/Young Couple will be expected to complete a Grange Trivia challenge with a score of at least 80% prior to attending the convention. Trivia challenge must be returned to the National Youth Director by October 15th of current year. Trivia challenges may be obtained from the National Director or the National Grange Youth website, www.nationalgrangeyouth.org.
      10. Official application form must be completed and postmarked by September 10th. Send to the National Grange Youth Development Director, which includes a summary of your Grange activities in the following areas: Fellowship, Activities, Recognition, Fun, Leadership, Service, and Membership.
      11. The following letters of recommendation are to be sent with the application:
        1. Subordinate Grange, preferably Master or Secretary.
        2. State Master
        3. State Youth Director (if applicable)
      12. Horizon Leadership youth ambassadors will be housed together at the National Grange Convention with up to three other official participants per room.
      13. Young Couples will be housed in the same area.
      14. Horizon Leadership Ambassadors/Young Couples will be recognized at the National Convention during the Evening of Excellence.
      15. Ambassadors/Young Couples or individual states are responsible for their own transportation and convention registration fee.
      16. The Grange Foundation Youth Leadership Fund will provide each ambassador with the following tickets:
        1. Tour
        2. Pizza Party
        3. Banquet
        4. Invitation to AOLE/GROW Club Dinner
      17. Any participant who fails to comply with the guidelines set up will be expected to pay their own expenses.

John Trimble Youth Legislative Experience 

      Opportunities for Legislative Experience

    National Convention Youth Legislative Experience will provide opportunities for one or two Grange youth age

    16 – 35, with an interest in the legislative aspect of the National Grange to see the inner workings of committees and the grass roots legislative policy development effort at the National Grange Convention.

  •  
    • Each youth will serve on one of the legislative committees reviewing resolutions as a voting member of the committee and as a youth staff assistant to the National Grange Legislative Director. Participants will watch the delegate body take action on the resolution and assist in other ways.
    • An individual may participate in the program a maximum of one time.
    • As a youth staff assistant they will be assigned some additional logistical duties so that they can see how the back room production process works at the convention. These duties will not conflict with the opportunities of seeing the National Delegates work on the floor.
    • As guests of the National Grange their room cost will be paid (which will be shared with other participants) plus meals or tickets to certain meal functions.
    • Transportation will be participant’s responsibility.
    • Any participant who fails to comply with the guidelines set up will be expected to pay their own expenses.
    • Applications will be submitted to the National Grange Youth Development Director, who will share applications with National Legislative Director and National Master in making selection of participants and assignment to committee.
    • Please include letters of recommendation from your Subordinate (Community) Grange Master, State Youth Director (if applicable) and your State Grange Master.

      Applications can be obtained from your State Youth Director, the National Youth Development Director, State Masters or the National Grange website at www.nationalgrangeyouth.org. Applications must be postmarked on or before September 10th to the National Youth Development Director. 

National Grange Youth Officers Team – Revised for 2012 

    Purpose: To assemble a team of Youth from across the nation to open the National Grange Convention on Friday morning at the annual session. This will provide more Youth with the opportunity to participate in the National Grange Convention.

  •  
    • The Grange Youth Officers Team will march in and open the Grange in the fourth degree and march out.
    • Master, Overseer, Steward, A.S., L.A.S., G.K. and Chaplain have speaking parts.
    • Lecturer will need to select an opening song.
    • Secretary will need to be prepared to call the roll of the Youth Officers – which will be established following the application process. Secretary is responsible for learning how to pronounce the names of the officers correctly.
    • Ceres, A.S., and L.A.S. will need to know how to present the flag properly according to the official Flag presentation ceremony offered by the National Grange.
    • A.S. and L.A.S. may submit suggestions for the seating & retiring drill. Also please limit the time of the opening drill to 6 minutes and the retiring drill to 3 minutes.
    • Musician applicants must submit a musical demonstration tape or cd. Musical piece should be no more than 3 minutes. Musicians may make suggestions for March Music. The National Grange Youth Development Director will screen any music suggestions for appropriateness.
    • There are 18 offices to be filled: Master, Overseer, Lecturer, Steward, A.S., L.A.S., Chaplain, Treasurer, Secretary, G.K., Ceres, Pomona, Flora, four Executive Committee positions and the Musician.
    • Those applying for a position should be Grange members who are at least 14 years of age but not over 35 years of age.
    • The National Grange Youth Development Director will contact each applicant with additional questions during the selection process.
    • The selection process will be based off letters of recommendation as well as the application. Preference will be given to qualifying youth that have not served on the N.G.Y.O.T. Youth previously serving as Master are ineligible for re-application.
    • Each applicant will be notified of the results no later than October 1st, so that each has adequate time to make travel arrangements. Each member of the N.G.Y.O.T. will receive a special certificate.
    • Applicants are required to prove that they have earned a minimum of three achievement awards, which have been earned between August 31st of the previous year and September 1st of this year. One award seal must be completed in the John Thompson Ritual Achievement Award. They will also need to complete the Grange Trivia Test.
    • Applicants must submit a letter of recommendation from a member of their local Grange – preferably Master, State Youth Director and State Master.
    • Applicants must be committed to memorizing their speaking part if the office they are applying to fill has a speaking part. Each applicant must be willing to comply with the dress guidelines that will be established for Youth Officers.
    • Single youth applicants must not have become pregnant nor have children during term of service. If under 18, must have parent’s consent.
    • Current Horizon Leadership Ambassadors and John Trimble Youth Legislative Experience delegates are not eligible to apply.
    • Youth housing at the National Convention will be available for any who wish to participate. If funds are available in the Grange Foundation Youth Leadership Fund financial assistance will be given for lodging and meals. If funds are not available all expenses incurred will be the responsibility of the youth participating.

      Applications must be postmarked on or before September 10, 2012 to the National Grange Youth Development Director. 

G.R.O.W. (“Go Right On Working”) Club 

    The G.R.O.W. Club is an elite club that is made up of Grange members who have participated in the National Grange Prince, Princess, Young Couple, Ambassador, Horizon Leadership program or have served as Youth team members or as a National Grange Youth Director.

    • All G.R.O.W. Club members uphold the theme of the Club by assisting in developing and promoting local, state, and national youth programs.
    • All G.R.O.W. Club members are encouraged to wear their G.R.O.W. Club pin.
    • An Annual reunion/meeting will be held at the National Convention with the possibility of introducing the newest members of the Club.
    • G.R.O.W. Club members are expected to encourage their local Granges, Grangers, Pomona Granges and State Granges to support the Grange Foundation Youth Leadership Fund.
    • An address and e-mail database will be continually updated of current members.
    • G.R.O.W. Club members have benefited from the Youth Leadership Fund; therefore they realize the value of the Fund. G.R.O.W. Club members will act as a “Booster Club” for the Youth Leadership Fund. G.R.O.W. Club members are encouraged to submit fundraising ideas. G.R.O.W. Club members may be utilized in fundraising efforts.
    • G.R.O.W. Club members will elect a board, which will consist of five elected members and two ex-officio members. One representative from each of the following regions shall be at the meeting by a majority vote: Eastern, Great Plains, Midwest, Northeast, & Western. A rotating board has been established; therefore allowing each member to serve for three years. The board shall select their own officers. The National Grange Master/President and the National Youth Development Director will serve as ex-officio members.
    • The G.R.O.W. Club board will be instrumental in planning the yearly activities for the G.R.O.W. Club.
    • The G.R.O.W. Club offers a Scholarship to all Grange members. Please see Youth Director for more details.
 

Grange Youth Commercial Contest 

  •  
    • Grange Youth have an opportunity to promote the benefits and values of the Grange Youth programs; through “commercials” they develop utilizing YouTube technology.
    • The goal of the contest is to see what youth can creatively promote the values and benefits of the Grange to non-Grangers. The non-Grange benefits include youth, the community, and family.
    • The commercials should only be one to two minutes long.
    • For consideration and official entry into the contest the video files should be submitted to the National Youth Director for review and posting.
    • Commercial submissions deadline is postmarked by September 10, 2012.
    • Entries may be submitted by an individual or a group.
    • Submitted commercials will be viewed at the 2012 National Grange Session. Winners will be announced at the 2012 National Grange Session. Prizes will be announced at a later date.
    • Entries will be judged on effectiveness in promoting the Grange, clarity of the message, video quality, and creativity.

Right on Target Youth Committee Award 

  •  
    • A Granger or a group of Grangers; who work together to reach out to the youth in their community can earn this award by setting a goal and sharing their accomplishment. Subordinate, Pomona Grange and State Youth programs are eligible for consideration.
    • The goal of their project, the plan of action and result must be submitted to the National Grange Youth Development Director to be considered for the award. Photos are not required but encouraged.
    • Each member of the planning and implementation committee will receive a certificate of recognition.
    • Reports can be sent to the National Youth Director at any time, but no later than September 10th of the current year for display at the National Convention.
    • Reports should contain a written summary of what was planned and the results of the project along with pictures that show what happened.
    • Monetary prizes will be awarded for winners.
    • All programs will be shared with State Grange Youth Directors, State Masters on the National Grange Youth Development Department program cd and may become available on the National Grange Youth website.
    • Entries must contain the names of the Grange members working on the project, along with a main contact name, address, phone number, Grange name and number.

Leadership Award for Outstanding Youth – Revised for 2012

    • This award is designed to recognize outstanding Grange Youth who go above and beyond in leading through the Grange through membership development, leadership growth and grassroots efforts.
    • This award can be designed to meet individual needs, however, they will need to complete the following:
      1. Earn a minimum of 3 different achievement award seals – can be from the same program or a combination of several.
      2. Complete the Grange Trivia Challenge; earn a minimum of 80%.
      3. Complete one of the following ritual elements: demonstrate the salutation, code reading or participate in the presentation of one of the Grange degrees.
      4. Participate in a project that promotes the Grange and/or Grange youth department.
      5. Demonstrate Leadership in the Grange.
    • Some examples of projects that will qualify for parts of this award are as follows:
      •  
        • Conduct a workshop that you develop and present.
        • Write a resolution and present it to your Grange for consideration.
        • Participate in a legislative event.
        • Organize a letter writing campaign for a worthy cause.
        • Participate in any type of leadership program.
        • Share your Grange spirit by helping create a display for a local event, a brochure promoting a Grange project, event or your local Grange. Help or create a Grange newsletter, or website, etc…
        • Participate in, promote, spearhead or organize a community service project in your Grange or volunteer at a local charity or charity event.
        • Share your heart by serving as a mentor to a Junior Grange as a helper.
        • Serve as a camp counselor at Junior Grange Camp or some other group.
        • Help your Subordinate, Pomona, or State Lecturer with a program.
        • Other leadership activities or projects not mentioned above.
    • Proof of your accomplishment must be submitted to the National Grange Youth Development Director postmarked by September 10th of the current year. A simple report, including picture, name, address, Grange name and number, or a letter from those you helped can be used as proof. Entries may also qualify for an achievement award seal. Each youth submitting proof will receive a special certificate and a lapel pin in recognition of their individual efforts.

Youth Grange Member Recruitment Award

    • Membership is a valuable part of the Grange experience and it is the responsibility of all members to grow the Grange. Youth are a part of the membership growth process. To encourage youth and young adults to grow the Grange, the youth department in conjunction with the membership department will be recognizing youth and young adults for their recruitment efforts. Members recruited can be of any age, must have never joined the Grange before. Membership application forms must be properly submitted to the State Grange. The award will be submitted by your State Youth Director with verification from the State Master and Membership Director (if applicable).
    • Each State can select one Grange youth to be recognized by the National Grange as its State Youth Recruiter of the Year.
    • Considerations for selection should include, but not exclusively:
      • Number of members recruited in a year.
      • Service on Grange Growth Team
      • Assistance with subordinate Grange membership growth activities and/or events.
      • Present the four steps of membership recruitment at a Subordinate Grange meeting.
    • State Youth Recruiter of the Year Awards will be presented during the Youth Days at National Session.
    • Individual Youth Recruitment Awards can be requested in advance of state sessions.
 

Sign-a-Song Regional Contests

    1. Novice – One, who is beginning to learn sign, has had no more than three sign language classes and has entered the sign-a-song contest no more than two years.
    2. Hobbyist – One, who has been signing on an occasional basis and strictly for fun; and who has entered the sign-a-song contest more than two years.
    3. Group – two or more people signing.
    4. Expert – Someone who signs professionally. Ineligible for Best of Show, but looking for opportunity to encourage others to participate.

        1. Each state may send one entry in each category to the regional competition. Selection of the state winners is under the jurisdiction of the State Grange.
        2. Participants are to supply the National Youth Development Director with three copies of the words to the song they are signing.
        3. Participants must provide their own music. A cassette or CD player will be available.
        4. Anyone who is a professional instructor or receives money for signing may only enter in the expert category. Expert category entries are ineligible for Best of Show. If there is a professional signer in a group entry, it is only eligible in the Expert category.
        5. Signers must use total communication techniques: Sign Language, facial expressions, mouthing of words for lip reading, finger spelling if appropriate, and body movement.
        6. Participants must be Grange members.
        7. Props and Costumes are not allowed. Rhythm is optional.
        8. Only one song may be signed during competition performance.
        9. Participants must sign their own name and song title.
        10. Participants must inform the audience and judges what type of sign language they will be using. (Pidgin, ASL, ESL, etc…)

    1. National Grange will provide ribbons for each regional contest for first, second and third place.
    1. The Best of Show will receive a special award and an additional cash award of $25 and be eligible to showcase at the National Grange Convention in November. To be eligible to participate in National Showcase, you must advance from your local region. Showcase acts will receive $100 for participating.
 

Grange Youth Regional Conferences

    • Regional conferences will be held in five regions in 2012 and will include workshops on techniques and programming that youth, young adults and older Junior Grangers will be able to use in their own states and communities.
    • Regional conferences will help youth and young adults develop needed life skills, and you do not need to be a Grange member in order to participate. Age is unimportant, but your enthusiasm and love for the Grange is needed.
    • Public Speaking and Sign-a-Song Competitions will be held at each regional conference.
