Family Activities

By Sophia Treser

"It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…." you add the musical notes and sing along. I love holiday music but can’t carry a tune in a bucket. My mistakes are loud and enthusiastic anyway! So, have you finished with your baking? With your shopping and wrapping? Have you finished with anything? Don’t tell me you’re one of those people who are all ready by the first of December. I can tell you for sure that when you read this I will absolutely not be finished with anything.

You will find the 2010 Family Activities competition categories in this issue of The Granger. Wouldn’t it be incredibly wonderful if we had participation from every Grange in the state? For the small groups, maybe just the purchase of one packet of raffle tickets would do it. For those with most members being seniors and unable to do the things they have done in the past – you probably have a wonderful item for the antique needlework category. Please do think about it - and then say "I’d be delighted"!

These cookies have a really fun name, are really good and they are easy, which is a bonus.

CRANBERRY HOOTYCREEKS

1 cup butter, softened

2 eggs

2 tsp vanilla

2/3 cups each brown sugar & white sugar

1 1⁄4 cups flour

1 tsp each salt and baking soda

1 cup each: rolled oats, chopped pecans, white chocolate chips, dried cranberries

Preheat oven to 350. Grease cookie sheet or line with parchment paper. Beat together butter (or half shortening, half butter), sugars, eggs, vanilla. Add flour, soda and salt. Stir in oats, pecans, chips and cranberries. (I chill the dough at this point) Drop by heaping spoonfuls onto baking sheet. Bake 8-10 minutes until edges start to brown. Cool before removing. Makes about four dozen, depending on size.

And now one that takes a bit of time but is a delicious treat and looks so pretty on a cookie

2010 Illinois State Grange Lecturer Contests

By Trisha Renken

707 Third St

Chillicothe, IL 61523

(309) 208-1684

Trisha.M.Renken@osfhealthcare.org

It’s that time of year again; time to plan all our Projects for the upcoming year. Let’s have a really exciting time!

LECTURER DECREE: The Lecturer directs the entertainment and educational work of the Grange. It is my challenge to present a program that makes every meeting inspirational and meaningful for all who attend. As we share our talents, our interests, and our knowledge with each other, we all grow into better individuals and more informed citizens of this community. The symbol of my office is the scroll.

For Subordinate Lecturers

I was disappointed in the return of Mission Statements from the last two years. Big Thanks to Broad Hollow, Enterprise and Hopewell Granges for turning theirs in last year. I am not giving up on you guys; the third time’s the charm. I have decided to make this project the state wide lecturer program this year. I will give you tips and how to’s in order to aid your Grange in developing your mission statement. I did this and my members said that I made a possibly painful procedure really manageable and not something that was just endured. And the outcome- well, we were quite happy.

This year my missive for the lectures is to send me a lecturers program you did this year. Send me a complete lecturer program you had. Pick one you are particularly proud of and send it to me by September 1st 2010. I want to have a sharing table at State Session with everyone’s program so other Subordinate Grange’s can borrow your idea and take it back to their Grange. Imagine – if everyone does this you have enough programs at your fingertips for two solid years. Let’s keep it fun, and sharing with each other is what we lecturers do.

I have included the National Grange Website HYPERLINK "http://www.nationalgrange.org" www.nationalgrange.org along the left hand side at the bottom. Follow the pathway for Program Resources/Lecturer Program/Lecturers Guide. Hopefully, these will help inspire ideas for anybody who needs a program at a moments notice or something for future programs.

2009 Contest Guidelines for every contest:

1. One entry per member may be submitted in each division.

2. Awards in each class.

3. Member name, Grange name and category name must be included on the back. At State

Session please include at time of check-in the name of responsible party for pick-up.

Photography:

"Water in Motion"

Back by popular Demand. This is a simple one in theory, vivid in print. This is an active water shot, such as an animal running through a puddle or a raging river. Have fun and get wet.

"Storms"

Are you a daredevil or adventure seeker? Do you crave the excitement only nature can provide. Capture a storm as Mother Nature supplies it. The wind, the rain, the lightning, the blizzard - all those elements that would make your mother cringe if she knew you were outside. Show us what you got using your camera. (Disclaimer- if you should see a tornado or other life altering factor, please use good sense and take proper cover.)

"Sunup/Sundown"

The sun is a beautiful thing. The oranges, the reds, the lights dancing over the dew in the morning are majestic to behold. The pinks and blues that blend with the night twilight can be quite breathtaking. Let us share in your wonder too.

"Daisy Do"

I’m looking for flower close-ups. Take a picture of any flower that beckons you to photograph it.

Guidelines for Photography

1. Only prints are accepted for judging. No slides

2. Participants may enter all categories, but only one entry per category per photograph.

3. Print may be made by a commercial process but must have been taken by the entrant personally WITHIN THIS GRANGE YEAR.

4. Backing is required for all photos. (This is so photographs are not damaged by fingerprints, handling, pushpins, or any metal clip that will display them) NO FRAMES.

5. Photo size should not exceed 5x7. Backing should not exceed 3⁄4" from the photograph.

6. Eligibility — All Grange members

7. Members are reminded that captions are optional and while there are not separate categories for close-ups or black and white photos, they are welcomed in all categories.

Juniors:

"Musical Instruments"

Here you go. I want you to make up a musical instrument. So as the judges can play the instrument- please do not involve anything that involves using your lips. Think of all those things that make music or sound and make one of your own. Please limit the size to something that would fit on a piece of 8 1⁄2 x 11 paper due to table space. Let your imagination run wild with this one.

"Rainy Days"

I want you to "do" a shoe box about your favorite rainy day activity. Tell me in one box what you do to stay busy when outside is just too wet to go out. Unless you’re a duck of course – then do a box on that.

"You Bug Me"

This is to go along with the bird theme of family activities. Take a picture of bugs. It could be an ant hill or one loan beetle. But try to take the picture BEFORE it ends up on the bottom of your shoe.

Guidelines for Juniors

1. Eligibility — Must be Junior grange member or family member of a Granger.

2. One entry only per member may be submitted in each division. (Age groups are 5-7 8-11 12-14 )

Arts & Crafts:

"Cheer Up"

It’s been a couple of years since we gave something to the Grange Nursing Home, so let’s do it right. I want homemade cards, lots and lots of homemade cards. Make it a lecturer’s program. If you have ever been hospitalized, you have been there lying in a bed with very little to do. So make a get well or thinking of you card to cheer up someone’s day.

"Rockin Robin"

Ok, ok, it doesn’t have to be a "robin". But how about a drawn portrait of a bird in whatever medium you choose- pencil, watercolor, charcoal etc. I don’t know what kind of artists we have out there so I’m keeping this loose this year and will probably limit the scope a little next year depending on what kind of entries I get this year.

Guidelines for Arts & Crafts

1. Please limit size of greeting card to a normal construction paper sheet (9x12) folded in half.

2. Please limit size of bird portrait to 11 x 14.

3. Frames are not necessary on portraits.

Creative Writing:

"First Love"

Romantics of the world unite. Well, how about a poem of your first love instead. Now this doesn’t necessarily have to be about a person. My mother likes to tell me how when I was little all my dolls had the same name- Cindy. So that could qualify as a first love. Putting this in poem form should be easy as it is a fond memory I’m sure.

"A Memorable day in Elementary School"

Now I’m sure everyone has a memorable day in Elementary School they can share. This could be happy, sad, silly or just a day you happen to remember. Mine is in 5th Grade when the boy behind me dropped his deck of cards all around our desks and I leaned over to help pick them up and got a detention for not paying attention. I smile now because I still think it wasn’t deserved as I was just doing something nice. Share with us a memory of your childhood as you remember it.

Guidelines for Creative Writing

1. Eligibility — All Grange members.

2. May be handwritten, typed, or from computer. If handwritten, it must be legible & neat – no pencil; must be written in either black or blue ink. Work must be your own creation, not copied from another source.

3. Length must not exceed 1 double spaced typed page (size 12-14 font) or 1 1⁄2 hand written pages.

Talent:

Everyone can do something for talent. Be it singing, playing an instrument, a skit, or even telling some corny jokes or groaners. WE NEED TALENT!! Let’s not depend on the youth to do it all, but rather show the Youth how it’s done!! Can you imagine if just one person from each grange participates in the talent show? We would have over 30 entries WOW!!

Please email me or call if you have a specific request ahead of time. Like always, I will have a CD player on hand. Also, you NEED NOT be attending National to participate. We just want to have a fun evening.
